The Lake District

I moved to the Lake District just over a year ago and the scenery, mountains, and lakes have really inspired my work. Last summer I created a series of mixed-media paintings that explored the hills, lakes and little white houses.

I plan to use these for a bigger series of paintings which I’ll call Big hills, little houses. Sometimes I find I get really excited about a project just by giving it a cool name!

I used these familiar subjects to test out new colour palettes. One limited colour palette that I have been enjoying is this green and orange palette, which gives everything a bit of a retro feel.

During the longer evenings of spring and summer, I love to take my art outside and up into the mountains. Plein air sketching is a real joy for me and each page in my sketchbook brings back memories of sunsets or sandwiches or cold fingers scribbling fast.

I find my style changes drastically when I am sketching outside and the challenges of a limited palette, fighting the elements, or chasing a setting sun often bring interesting and unpredictable results.
